Lorne Bair Rare Books specializes in the literature and ephemera of American social movements, with particular emphasis on the radical causes of the Progressive Era: revolutionary socialism, anarchism, the I.W.W., militant suffrage and civil rights movements. We have a special fascination and fondness for the proletarian writers of the teens, twenties and thirties, and always maintain a strong stock of first editions by such writers as Jack Conroy, Theodore Dreiser, Upton Sinclair, Josephine Herbst, James Farrell, and others who dedicated their careers to merging art and social consciousness. We place similar importance on the visual movements of this highly visual era, and over the years our stock has evolved to include nearly as much graphic material as books and pamphlets.

Our home base is in the heart of the picturesque Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, which (while never precisely a hotbed of American progressivism) provides us with a convenient debarkation point for our frequent forays into regions further North, East and West. This will be just our second year exhibiting our stock at the Ann Arbor Book Fair, but we sense fertile ground here, and expect many happy returns.

You can contact Lorne Bair directly at his website with questions about titles or subjects he might have in stock or be bringing to the book fair. And remember that you can see Lorne on May 18, 2010, at the Ann Arbor Antiquarian Book Fair from 11:00 AM until 5:00 PMĀ  in the ballroom of the Michigan Union on the University of Michigan Campus.
